So I was blog tagged by Jason, so I guess its my turn. So here are my things you may or may not know about me.
- My middle name is Roy, there are a number of Roys on my mom’s side. Really named after my grandfather Leroy Watson, who incidentally was a consummate entrepreneur.
- My entrepreneurial endeavors started when I was 10 years old, and used to sell candy to my classmates. I used to buy candy at costco, and resell it in the black market that is elementary school.
- I am an avid snowboarder, despite growing up less than 10 miles from the ocean. But I cannot surf at all. Now if only I could get to the slopes more often.
- I ran for elected office on a write-me-in for every spot campaign in college. I managed to come in 3rd in I believe 4 different positions. Can’t imagine what would have happened if I’d won!
- I started infinimedia when I was 14 years old. 10 years ago. It was originally named Internet Page Makers, and was pretty cool at the time. Here we are a decade later, and the company is going stronger than ever. 2007 is going to be huge.
So those are my 5 things. To keep this going, I’ll tag Xavier, Josh, and YOU.
So on this sunny monday afternoon, I figured I would share with you a couple of neat finds that I enjoyed for various reasons.
- Mark Cuban thinks google should buy its way into the music biz by paying off the record labels. - this would completely disrupt Apple and Microsoft’s Zune, or be a total flop, and no one would buy Google’s wares. But if they tied it into their smart phone that ran their mail, docs, etc. then maybe.
- David Sklansky - poker book author (I definitely recommend his poker theory book) - has posted a challenge to all christians who believe that jesus resurrected, and that non christians go to hell, that they cannot beat him in the SATs. He is betting $50k that they can’t win.
So it seems i started rambling on my last entry, and forgot to actually offer up a tip.
So today’s tip: Go to David Seah’s site, download the emergent task timer. Print out whichever version you like. Staple it to the inside of your manila folder for a project. This way you have a task list for each project on your desk. What no manila folders? go buy some!
This will also let you track who is doing what, as basecamp can’t always be your sole resource.
So what have I been upto this week? Well Monday we had RefreshMiami on monday where Mike Gowan presented about Tick. It was his first presentation ever, but he still managed to hold our attention for 45+ minutes! Hats off to Mike.
I’ve been dealing with InfiniSuite, writing up a storm for web+, doing some cool blogging things, and working on client work.
Sorry for the lack of postings lately, been waiting on my buddy Chris to finish applying my design to the Web+ (webpl.us) blog. Not to mention being unusually busy this past week. We’ve been working on some exciting stuff over at the infiniHQ.
Some of the things we’ve been working on:
- Rebuilding Squurl from the ground up (much faster, and more flexible)
Working on a new brand theme for infinisuite
- Branding for TonalWar - check out the new logo courtesy of our new designer Antonio
- A couple of cool client projects for PACE, Fortune International, and Schenker
- Strategy and more for castvertising
- some minor design improvements to campusfix before we launch
- discussing code alot lately too
- oh yeah, and working on a new blog with Alex called Web+
So as you can see, those are SOME, not even all the reasons i’ve been so tired lately.
Last week when Ev bought back his company from the investors, it sparked a lot of discussion about serial entrepreneurs vs parallel entrepreneurs. Granted there was a lot of discussion about whether or not the VC model is dead, but thats not what I wanted to focus on.
Entrepreneurs are an interesting bunch of people, often filled with tons of ideas, because at the heart of it all, we are just idea people. Idea people willing to take the risk to get those ideas to fruition and execute on them. Everyone who is an entrepreneur is an idea person (even franchisees, because their idea was to bring that chain to a certain place). Entrepreneurs who are worth their salt know one simple rule though: ideas are cheap, execution is what really matters. I just like every other entrepreneur out there probably has a thousand ideas a year that get written on scrap paper or entirely forgotten, but its that one idea that gets executed which counts. Or in the case of myself or Ev, its those 2 or 3 or 10 ideas that you throw out there and hope they catch on.
So all of you entrepreneurs or idea people out there, remember that building a new idea is getting cheaper, and the risks are getting lower. Even non web projects are getting cheaper to build.
The other day I wrote about how i’ve been writing a todo list on a notebook every day, and then crossing things off as i go through them. Today I’d like to suggest some other ideas for productivity:
- Write todo items on scraps of paper and pull them out of a hat. Might not be the most efficient method, but hey, its random
- Take your to do list, look to see what would take 5 minutes or less, write those things down on a new sheet of paper, place new sheet on top, and do them all.
- Every time you eliminate 10-20% of your list, scratch them out, or write a new list that contains just the remaining things. This might seem inefficient, but who cares, you’re doing yourself a mental favor by tricking yourself into thinking there are that fewer number of things to do.
any suggestions?
So I’ve been thinking alot more lately on productivity issues, and basically how things get done every day. It led me to realize that I need to adhere to these goals and tasklists i set out formyself, and do my best to get them all done. I’ve been reading a lot of Dave Seah’s stuff on productivity, and its amazing how much stuff you can get done if you just have it written down in front of you.
I’ve started writing on my manila pad every morning the top 10 things i want to get done today, blogging is never on there, but I think its a good thing to take care of too. So my suggestion to everyone reading this, print out a task list. Put 10-15 things on it. Try and get 40-50% of those things done every day. At the end of the day, scratch off the completed ones, and write a new task list for the next morning. Try this for a week, see if you get more stuff done, if you do, then make your next week’s goal to do 50-60% of the tasks each day. Sooner or later you’ll have a lot of free time on your hands, and when that happens, get yourself a drink, and head to the beach.
Tonight I was thinking about how important it is to set some goals and targets for yourself in life. So what are your goals in life? Or better yet, what are your 6 month goals? I would make it shorter, but time flies, and its hard to plan for shorter periods.
My 6 month goals? To launch every project i started in the first 8 months of this year, and any earlier projects that might be about to launch, but haven’t quite gotten there yet. Is this going to be challenging? Damn right it will be. Will it be worth it? I think so.
So what are your 6 month goals? They can be personal or business, the podium is yours.
I’m going to start blogging again here. Hopefully this can emerge as a place where I ramble on and on about whatever may be happening in my life, or what I’m thinking about.
The theme is QWILM for wordpress. I’ll post a link soon. Once i get a free afternoon I’ll post up an original theme.
Thats it for now. so check back soon.
Not much to post yet, busy working on an unending number of projects, suffering through endless delays, and the heat are in the finals.
